What Coco’s up to at 22 months

Sunday, August 15th, 2010

I can’t believe the 2-yr birthday is coming right up! Just two more months. Well, at 22 months, this is what she’s like…

  • She continues to say really funny things, or normal things in really funny ways.
  • She has definite opinions. She always did, but now, for instance, if you start singing and she doesn’t want to hear it, she barks out, “NO!”
  • Her latest thing is yelping out shrill yells or screaming at the top of her lungs when she doesn’t like something or wants to be the center of attention but isn’t. We try a variety of things and are still working on it.
  • However, when there’s an adoring crowd, she turns on the charm and slaps on a big, cute smile for the folks. When they smile, she smiles more and starts with her silly fakey funny laugh. This happened just tonight at a restaurant. I say great, the more there is to keep her happy and not screaming, the better.
  • Coco’s a runner. Back and forth and back and forth, outside, inside, on sidewalks, sometimes without watching where she’s going (despite parroting back my warning, “Watch out you’re GOING!”).
  • She’s still a daredevil and still does backwards tricks on her sideways rocking horse.
  • She’s been jumping for months and likes to jump jump jump like a bunny rabbit. Wears me out when I try to jump along with her.
  • Falling asleep is usually okay. Sometimes she stays up talking to herself, and sometimes it’s just that she needs a diaper change, but most of the time, she’s tired and goes right down.
  • She still gets about 11-12 hours of sleep a day, 2 hours during a midday nap and 10 hours at night. More sleep would be nicer for us, but it’s so much better than the early days, when she slept in such short bursts and needed us to get to sleep.
  • She’s not a very ravenous eater. It takes convincing to get into the high chair and then she may or may not be interested in the food.
  • She’s taken to drawing on her Magnadoodle and with crayons, and can draw circles of sorts. Circles, dots, and lines. Of course she’ll tell you they’re babies or various animals or whatever. “Oh wow!”
  • She’s going through a phase right now where she asks me to draw a baby and then colors it in (completely) so you can’t see the baby anymore. :-)
  • She’s good with puzzles–the wood ones where the vehicles or farm animals go in the slots aren’t too challenging anymore but she still seems to like them.
  • I don’t know when, but somewhere in the last few months she figured out how to put the stacking blocks away, in order from big to small. I just saw it today.
  • She loves the Legos and figured out that 2 different sets can fit together.
  • She wants to climb but still has problems not knocking her noggin.
  • Walking down shorter sets of stairs, she’ll brush away my hand and say “No help,” then go down the steps herself. She also goes up steps, even big ones, by herself. Of course, I am always standing guard 2 inches behind her, playing catcher, and I still hold her hand going down big steps.
  • She still loves her Thomas and Mickey and Elmo, but Reading Rainbow (a.k.a. “Levar Burton”) seems to be her favorite DVD
  • Most of the time, she gets left and right correct.
  • I saw her arrange some Legos by color today, first green, then blue, then orange. I hadn’t noticed her do that before.
  • She likes cataloging who is in the room and what they’re doing or some trait, and then recapping often: “Mommy and Daddy and Mommy and Coco and …” or “Mommy black hair, Daddy light brown hair, Coco light brown hair” (we don’t say red b/c it’s too confusing). She also likes to blurt out what she observes, such as “MAN! WOMAN!”
  • She’s taken to making statements involving “everyone/everybody” or “somebody” as in, “Somebody’s drinking water!” or “Everybody is sitting.”
  • The toothbrushing process is still ridiculous, but at least she’ll let us brush if I sing an entire rendition of “Wheels on the Bus” and/or “Itsy Bitsy Spider.”
  • She’s sat on the potty 2 or 3 times, though nothing came out. I was letting her get acquainted with it, since she said in the bath prior to that that she had to go.
  • I think I’m hearing her use some singulars/plurals and verb tenses correctly, like “Coco’s walking” or “one hand, two hands”
